Lately, as part of my studies, I had to create a presentation that depicted the running and detection of a denial of service (DoS) attack. Essentially, this DoS attack (as with most DoS attacks) just spams illegitimate traffic at a target, to a point where the target is no longer able to process the legitimate traffic that may be coming through.
A SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) tool was used to detect the attack and gather information on it. A standard Linux/Kali build was used to launch the simple attack. Nothing too crazy here, but it is still a decent high-level example of how these types of attacks may be launched and detected.
